This residence for a sculptor, which includes a main house, studio, and guest space for visiting artists, comprises of angular voids cut from an orthogonal mass to realize an expressive place of refuge. The house abstractly interprets Southwestern motifs to reflect the indigenous art and heritage of the owner. The ladders use for vertical circulation, for instance, are recall the experience of emerging from a kiva. An early work of the office, the project was groundbreaking in its time for using radiant concrete floors, board-form concrete, and raw stucco finishes.
