mesa house
This project is an addition and extensive renovation of an existing single-family home located on a wooded down-slope site in Santa Monica Canyon, wrapped in Ipe wood fences surrounded by tropical gardens, mature sycamore trees & and bamboo walls. The design emphasizes natural ventilation principles for an energy-efficient build, while the skylights and pocket doors maximize indoor-outdoor living.
The client envisioned their residence as having a “contemporary tree-house” feel, which would be integrated with the natural setting of their canyon property. The entrance of this secluded oasis is from above, amidst a canopy of trees that hides the property from the street. The home is detailed with sustainably harvested tropical hardwoods and employs green design principles throughout. The custom wood details include vaulted mahogany ceilings in the living room, the custom Poliform kitchen, and a staircase with more than 600 individual planks. Other materials include warm wood, smooth stones, and panes of glass. The organic bathroom has two stone-basin vanities separated by a double rainwater shower and radiant heating floors. The house features numerous sundecks, balconies, terraces, and eco-conscious gardens.
The environmentally conscious design included natural milk paints, Ipe wood front door, decks, & giant sliders. Seamlessly flowing decks, bridges & balconies integrate lush gardens into creative living spaces. The dining area and cozy retreat spots are surrounded by sliding walls of glass that invite the outdoors in. The project includes a wooden floating staircase, spectacular front bridge entrance & separate guest house w/ bath & oversized garage.
